Devotional

On the same day that Jesus was resurrected, two of his disciples were walking and talking together on the road to Emmaus. During Jesus' time, most people traveled by walking. They were walking about seven miles from Jerusalem to Emmaus. With the death of Jesus fresh on their mind, and his body found missing from the tomb that morning, it was all they could talk about. They'd hoped that Jesus would be the one to redeem Israel. Like many of the disciples, they did not fully understand Jesus' mission while on earth.

While they are walking, Jesus came up and began to walk beside them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. Jesus has a little fun with disciples, acting like he does not understand or has not heard about the recent events of his own death, or about his own body going missing from the tomb that morning. Jesus definitely has a sense of humor.

As his disciples wondered about what had happened, Jesus began to teach them. He pointed out that all of the prophets had been pointing to and waiting for this very moment. Jesus went through the entire Bible, beginning with Moses, and going through all of the prophets, explaining how he had to suffer and die in order for Israel to be saved.

After his disciples invited Jesus to stay with them, he revealed himself to them and their eyes were opened. Then Jesus disappeared! They were so excited, that they got back up and walked seven miles back to Jerusalem so they could tell the other followers of Jesus about what had happened. "The Lord has risen indeed!" This is good news for us, and we should celebrate and tell others also!

Think about it!

Use some questions to review the story with your family. These questions are built just for STUDENTS.

Read Luke 24:13–16 and Ask: When was the last time that you experienced hard things and couldn't see Jesus in the midst of your disappointment and sadness? When did Jesus show up and surprise you? Are you experiencing that now?

Read Luke 24:25-27 and Ask: Would you say that you have a full and complete understanding of Jesus? Have you ever misunderstood something Jesus did? How can you better understand who Jesus is and how he works in our lives?

Read Luke 24:30-35 and Ask: How can we cultivate a life where our eyes are opened and our hearts burn for Christ? When was the last time that you were excited about the good news of Jesus being resurrected from the grave? How can you share that good news with those that don't know Jesus?

Remember It!

Take a few minutes to review our catechism question and memory passage. You can sing the memory passage song and dance along to the final worship song about how we have new life in Jesus.

Memory Passage:"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16

Review and Pray!

Here are some great ideas to review this lesson in your own family. These activities are built just for KIDS.

At the end of your devotional, take time to pray. Pray for those who are severely affected by the virus, for our government leaders as they make decisions about our city, state, and country, and for peace for our church family during these trying times.
