S2:E9 - If No One Can Obey God’s Law, Why Did God Give It?

Welcome back Press Pause! We’re wrapping up season 2 this week with our last two questions that bring our Ten Commandment deep-dive to a close. Why should we even consider the Ten Commandments at all now that Jesus has come? That’s a great question that we’ll answer with two questions of our own! Here are our questions and answers for this week’s episode.

Q: Who can obey God’s law?

A: No one but Jesus can obey God’s law perfectly.

Q: If no one can obey God’s law, why did God give it?

A: God gave the law to show us his goodness, to show us our sin, and to show us we need Jesus.

Paul addresses both our questions in Romans 3. He writes in verse 23, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” making it clear that even the best rule followers can’t obey God’s law perfectly. In verse 20 he tells us, “Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.”

Paul gives us a clear picture of what the law is meant to do - show us our own sinfulness. Grab your Bible, and read Romans 3:9-24 together before listening to this week’s episode.
