What Is God Like?
Host: Welcome to Press Pause, the under 10-minute family worship podcast. This podcast is designed to help you—dads, moms, grandparents, and guardians—share big truths about Jesus with your kids. Just listen along with your family and keep your finger near your device so that you’re ready to press pause and talk about this week’s big truth with your kids.
Before we begin, I have a question for the guys: Can you tell me a little bit about your family?
And, Jared, can you tell us about this week’s big questions and answers?
Teacher 1: Sure thing. This week, there are two big questions. The first is… What is God like? And the answer is… God is our loving and almighty creator. Let’s say it again: What is God like? [Together: God is our loving and almighty creator.]
The second question helps us explain just how long God has been loving and almighty. It’s this...Does God have a beginning? And the answer is… No. He has no beginning and no end. He is forever!
Host: Where do we learn about this in the Bible?
Teacher 1: We learn about how God is our loving and almighty Creator in Psalm 8. Two key verses from that Psalm are verses 3 and 4: “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?”
Press Pause then open your Bible to Psalm 8 and read that passage with your family.
Host: Psalm 8:3–5 says, “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.”
So, God is our loving and almighty creator. He is also the forever God. He has no beginning and no end. Trey, can you tell us why that’s important?
Teacher 2: Well, Kevin, people build rocket ships to fly above the atmosphere and to the moon and Mars. We send satellites to the edges of our solar system, and we build telescopes to see beyond our galaxy. People have never traveled to the edge of the universe, but, even if we could, God is still bigger. The Bible says, “LORD, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens.” Our majestic God is perfectly powerful. He’s not limited by time or space or ability. He sees what happened at the beginning of time, and he knows what will happen at the end. Because God is mighty and eternal, he doesn’t need us. God is perfect and full of joy—all by himself.
But God still thought about us. He’s mindful of us. He chose to make us. He’s given us bodies and souls, eyes and ears, a brain to think, and hands to feel. He takes care of your daily needs—clothes to wear, a bed where you can sleep, family and friends. Every good gift you have comes from God. Why does the almighty God who doesn’t need anything give so much to us? Do we earn or deserve his love?
Teacher 1: No way!
Teacher 2: That’s right, Jared, God gives us all these mercies simply because he’s our loving and merciful Father. Because of this, we say thank you to him, serve him, and obey him.
Press Pause and talk about it with your family. Answer this question together: How does it make you feel when you remember the truth that God loves you and thinks about you?
Host: Okay, we’re back. So, can you answer the question? How does it make you feel when you remember the truth that God loves you and thinks about you?
Teacher 1: God’s fatherly kindness and compassion toward us are amazing. It’s better than anything we could earn or deserve. Let’s pause and tell God how grateful we are for his great love as we pray. God, you are big and mighty. Thank you for thinking about and loving us. Thank you for sharing your joy with us when you didn’t have to. Amen.
