Host: Welcome to Press Pause. It’s the under-ten-minute family worship podcast designed to help you—dads, moms, grandparents, and guardians—share big truths about Jesus with your kids.

Whether you’re a young parent taking your first steps to spend intentional time discipling your child, or you’re a seasoned pro who’s already got weekly devotional rhythms in place, this podcast is for you and it couldn’t be easier to use! Just listen along with your family and be ready to press pause from time to time and talk about this week’s big truth with your kids.

Before we begin, I have a question for the guys: Can you tell me who your favorite athlete was when you were growing up?

Let’s learn about this week’s big question and answer.

Teacher 1: The big question for today is… Who made you? And the answer is… God made everything and me. Let’s say it again. Who made you? [Together: God made everything and me.]

Host: Where do we learn about that in the Bible?

Teacher 1: We learn about how God made everything and us in Genesis chapter one. The very first verse from that passage is Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Press Pause then open your Bible to Genesis 1:1–31 and read that passage with your family.

Host: So, Genesis 1:26–28 says this:

“Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’

So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’”

God made everything and us. Can an you tell us why that’s important?

Teacher 2: Sure, we’ve learned from the Bible that God made everything. He made every kind of place—the mountains, rivers, forests, and oceans. He crafted every kind of plant—pine trees, bluegrass, rose bushes, and even the broccoli we eat (or avoid!) God even made the seaweed that grows under the ocean. He made every kind of animal—giraffes, butterflies, aardvarks, and stingrays. And he made you and me.

When we make things, we use materials that we have on hand. If you wanted to make a piece of artwork, you’d take a blank piece of paper or a canvas. Then, you’d use crayons, markers, pencil, pen, or paint to create something on that blank page. You might even cut out clippings from a magazine and paste them into your masterpiece with glue. God didn’t create that way. He didn’t have any materials or supplies (there weren’t any!). Amazingly, God made everything out of nothing at all.

Teacher 1: If God didn’t use any supplies, how did he make things?

Teacher 2: That’s the thing, God made everything and us just by speaking words. The first day began because God said, “Let there be light.” God spoke, and what God spoke happened. It’s hard to imagine because we can’t make things with just words. But, when God speaks, his Word creates new things.

Press pause and talk about it with your family. Answer these questions together:  What is your favorite thing God made? And if you could make something with just words, what would it be?

Host: Okay, we’re back. So, if you could make something with just words, what would it be?

Teacher 2: You know, I have a pretty wild imagination. But I don’t think I could’ve thought up all the crazy animals God made. Who could dream up a giraffe except for God!?! Let’s close our time in prayer by giving God thanks for all the amazing things he’s made. God, thank you for all of the wonderful things you’ve created—ice cream, podcasts, grass and trees, and even us. Amen.
